We all enjoy going out to eat and being served as a treat. Eating in a restaurant should be that – a treat, not a regular occurrence that takes the place of cooking at home. Besides the expense, many things can be taught by preparing meals at home – teamwork, economy, and putting love into the food you prepare. Food preparation allows you to add your own touch, your own flare to the foods, to be creative and at the same time teach your family good nutrition by controlling what they eat.
When my children were in college, they often brought home friends to dinner or for the weekend. These college age friends relished my home cooking. At the time, I just thought they enjoyed the food because they were used to the cafeteria food served at school. I later learned that even at home, their parents rarely cooked and that eating out or bringing in takeout food was a way of life for their families. I can’t imagine eating dinner out with a family more than once or twice a week.
These young adults simply did not have the experience of regular home cooked food. They cherished their time in our home because they always got wholesome, well balanced meals that were tasty and satisfying. Even breakfast was an experience far and above a granola bar or bowl of cereal. A bowl of soup – any kind – was especially appreciated. Preparing a home-cooked dinner does not have to be arduous. There are many, many delicious meals that can be made at home that are quick and easy. Some meals require some organization. Other things can be prepared ahead of time and frozen to take out when needed. Children should not have to go to other people’s homes for a home-cooked meal. Create a culture in your home that appreciates food by taking the time to do it yourself.
