Watching the Oscars with all its glitz and glamor have become a social occasion almost akin to the Super bowl. It is a time when family and friends might get together to enjoy those moments from the movies they saw during the year, or get a taste of the movies they missed and have put on the ‘to see list.’
I enjoy the next day reviews of the clothes each of the stars wear, who their designers are, and how they looked. I am often amazed at the jewelry, or sometimes the lack of it, the simplicity or the extravagance. The commentators seem to examine and scrutinize every little thing. I always think how I might look in one of those dresses, all decked out.
Once I was on Fifth Avenue and ventured into a store to check the price of a dress I fell for. My sticker shock was akin to Julia Roberts on Pretty Woman shopping on Rodeo Drive. I’d have to win the lottery to go back. But it’s so much fun to see the fashions, the designs, the way people look or are dressed! The smattering of entertainment is just enough to be a tease.
These occasions call for light fare. So I’ve developed and modified some recipes for the occasion. Start out with my own version of Sangria, using those fruit teas you have in your closet and rarely use. My Zucchini Parmesan Bites are filled with enough flavor to really arouse the sense. For more substance, my Tortellini with Parsley Walnut Sauce fills the spot, along with our Spinach Potato Hors-D’œuvre. For dessert, this Brownie Torte is easy and fun.
